Wilderness Travel Encounters
Travel days don't have to be dead air. Roll on this table when the party crosses open country — each entry pairs an encounter with a twist, so a simple meeting turns into a decision.
How to use: Roll any die that fits the list length, or just pick. The first line is what the party sees; the twist is what's actually going on. Reskin freely for forest, road, coast, or tundra.

| 3 | A field of crows that won't scatter, all facing one direction | They're watching a fresh grave that wasn't there yesterday, and it's the right size for the party. |
| 4 | A hunter tracking a stag with a silver hide | The stag is leading the hunter in a slow circle back toward a den it wants emptied. |
| 5 | A toll bridge with no toll-keeper, only a locked iron box | The box is full. The last people who skipped the toll are downstream, also full of water. |
| 6 | A pilgrim walking barefoot, carrying a covered birdcage | Whatever's in the cage hums hymns; the pilgrim hasn't slept since it started. |
| 7 | A campfire, still warm, food untouched on the spit | Boot prints lead away in a panic. The fire won't go out, no matter how it's smothered. |
| 8 | A pair of knights dueling in the middle of the road | They've been dueling for years, cursed to repeat it; ending it requires answering why they started. |
| 9 | A flock of sheep with no shepherd, blocking the path | One sheep wears a collar with a name and a plea scratched into the brass. |
| 10 | A standing stone with fresh offerings of bread and milk | Eat the bread and you can see who left it. They've been watching the road for a long time. |
| 11 | A traveling tinker whose cart plays music as it rolls | The music keeps something in the woods at bay; he's nearly out of the song that does it. |
| 12 | A river running the wrong way, uphill and quiet | Anything thrown in floats upstream. Follow it to find what's pulling, or what's calling. |
| 13 | A gallows at a crossroads, the noose swaying with no wind | The condemned was innocent; until the real culprit is named, no traveler passes unwatched. |
| 14 | A wounded soldier crawling from a battle no one's heard of | His unit's colors belong to a kingdom that fell — or will fall — depending who you ask. |
| 15 | A beekeeper tending hives far from any home | The bees make honey that mends wounds; the price is a memory you won't miss until it's gone. |
| 16 | A caravan of empty wagons driven by silent, hooded figures | The wagons are for the return trip. The drivers are choosing who fills them. |
| 17 | A bog with a path of dry stones marked by old rope | The rope is new. Someone re-marks the safe path each night — and changes it. |
| 18 | A fox that crosses the road again, and again, and again | It's the same fox each time, leading anyone who follows to a fresh kill that isn't an animal. |
| 19 | An overturned coach, doors open, no passengers, no horses | The luggage is monogrammed with a noble crest and a date two weeks in the future. |
| 20 | A peddler selling maps to 'the shortcut everyone misses' | The shortcut is real and saves a day; it also passes a thing that collects a day from each traveler. |
| 21 | A grove where every tree has a face carved into the bark | The carvings change expression as you pass. One of them mouths a warning; another mouths your name. |
| 22 | A wedding party stranded, the bride weeping, the groom gone | He didn't run. The wedding ring is on the ground, and so is everything else he was wearing. |
| 23 | A milestone marker that lists a town no map shows | The distance on it shrinks each time you check. The town wants visitors badly. |
| 24 | A blind harper at a fork in the road, playing for coin | He names which fork each traveler will take before they choose, and he's always right. |
