Wild Magic Surges
A surge is only as good as the story it starts. Each effect here is written to be played — vivid enough to derail a scene, light enough to drop into any system.
How to use: Roll one when a wild surge triggers (or whenever you want the table to gasp). Lean into the detail — the best surges become running jokes or quiet hooks. Save the ominous ones for when the party gets too comfortable.
- A swarm of harmless butterflies pours from your mouth — Bright, silent, gone in a round. Everyone saw. No one forgets.
- Your shadow detaches and mimics you a second late — It obeys for a minute, then sulks back into place.
- You age backward exactly one year — Just one. You'll spend the night wondering which year you lost.
- Every unlocked door in sight swings open at once — Politely. As if the room had been expecting guests.
- Your voice swaps with the nearest animal's — For a minute you bark; somewhere a dog argues philosophy.
- A second moon rises for ten minutes — Only you can see it, and it is watching you specifically.
- Flowers bloom in your footprints — They wilt the instant someone else steps where you stepped.
- Your blood runs gold for an hour — Harmless, valuable-looking, and very hard to explain to a healer.
- Your breath fogs as the air goes cold — A single word forms in the frost on the nearest glass.
- You drift two inches off the ground — You can't rise higher and you can't touch down. Just hover, smugly.
- Everyone's name is briefly forgotten — Yours included. For one minute the whole party introduces itself again.
- Rain falls upward from the floor — Only in this room, only for a minute, only on you.
- Your reflection lags a moment behind you — And keeps the expression you had, not the one you have now.
- A small locked chest appears, warm to the touch — The key is somewhere you have already been.
- You speak only in rhyme until the next dawn — Badly. The table is encouraged to be merciless.
- Mushrooms ring you in a perfect circle — Step out and they follow, rooting wherever you stop.
- Your weight halves for an hour — You're easy to throw, hard to pin, and the wind has opinions.
- Every candle flame in sight leans toward you — As if you were a door it wanted opened.
- You inherit the memory of a stranger's ordinary afternoon — Vivid, mundane, and not yours. Whose tea was that?
- Silence falls in a ten-foot bubble around you — No words, no clatter, no warning shouts — for one tense minute.
- Your hair grows a foot in seconds — And keeps the color of the last strong emotion you felt.
- A crow lands and will not leave your side — It knows one word and is waiting for the worst moment to say it.
- Coins in every pocket turn to seeds — Plant them and something grows. Spend them and the merchant frowns.
- You glow softly in the dark for an hour — Bright enough to read by. Bright enough to be found by.
